Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “black, gray, and white.” Use one, use ’em all. Bonus points if you use all three. Have fun!
The very first thing that came to my mind is a lyric that I’ve been loving for quite a while out of one of Taylor Swift’s songs. It is a song from her “Reputation” album, and I think some of her later work is better. It is a good song—not one of my favorites—but the woman can turn a phrase, and this one always struck me as gold. Taylor is doing her story telling thing and this one is a bit of high society shenanigans, or as said in the lyrics, a jet set Bonnie and Clyde…
No, nothing good starts in a getaway car
It was the best of times, the worst of crimes
I struck a match and blew your mind
But I didn’t mean it
And you didn’t see it
The ties were black, the lies were white
In shades of gray and candlelight
I wanted to leave him
I needed a reason
The ties were black, the lies were white, in shades of gray and candlelight… Holy cow. I love that! I wish I had written that. I didn’t. That’s why she’s rich and famous, and I’m not. (One of several reasons.) Kudos, Ms. Swift.
She has many songs, some better than others, where similar little gems shine. I could do a whole series of posts on those. Who knows, maybe some day I just might.
